Three dimensional structure of the Elongator Complex revealed by MCB scientists

Earlier this month a highly reputed international scientific journal (EMBO Reports) has published the latest research results of the Max Planck Research group hosted at MCB. There is something more to be proud of, as the study was even featured as this month’s cover story (see picture).

The authors from Germany, France and Poland under the co-leadership of dr Sebastian Glatt revealed the three dimensional structure of the Elongator Complex, which is responsible for specifically modifying tRNA molecules. The work elegantly combines results from different fields, including electron microscopy, crystallography, biochemistry, mass spectrometry, bioinformatics, and molecular modeling. The article provides the first comprehensive structural characterization of this highly conserved and clinically relevant molecular machine, as mutations in the respective subunits have been associated with neurodegenerative diseases, cancer and intellectual disabilities. Part of this work was supported by the OPUS 10 grant from the National Science Center (NCN), awarded to the Max Planck Laboratory in 2016.
