Research area

Despite the major advances in understanding disease in the post-genomic era, the majority of all drugs and nutrients are still only effective in a limited number of patients. From a clinical perspective, implementing knowledge-based decisions on what therapeutics or nutrients to use for which patients and, if relevant, in which combinations, is extremely challenging. The aspiration to provide more effective therapeutic interventions tailored to individuals or groups of individuals with common molecular phenotypes remains unfulfilled because of the variable response of individuals to such interventions. Our aim is to deliver novel concepts for disease-mechanism based patient stratification to address the need for stratified or personalised therapeutic interventions. The concept integrates multidimensional and longitudinal data and harnesses the power of -omics, including pharmacogenomics and nutrigenomics, biomedicine systems approaches, network analysis and computational modelling. The concept of stratification will be validated in pre-clinical and clinical studies of civilization diseases, taking into account gender differences.

Main scientific interest:

  1. The role of labile products of arterial wall in development of atherosclerosis and restenosis, with special interest in nitric oxide and growth factors; genetics of apo AI, the role of NO and arachidonic acid derivatives in reverse cholesterol transport.
  2. Genetic background of obesity, metabolic syndrome, atherosclerosis, hypertension, neurological disorders, and other risk factors for civilization diseases.
  3. Influence of food and nutrition on health – study of genes expression in animal models.
  4. New biomarkers for health for modern diagnostics – susceptibility gens and its influence on health and disease
  5. Stem cells usage for regenerative medicine – differentiation into osteoblastic lineage of human ASCs from subcutaneous fat tissue on nanoporous TiO2
  6. Personalized medicine – influence of genetic background to a better therapeutic stratification
  7. Newest trends in clinical diagnostics, pharmacogenomics, nutrigenomics and genetics in service for health, and well understanding modern therapy and precision medicine.

  1. Education and expertise on international level
    ​Drawing up scientific and educational materials for the e-learning course entitled: "Gene Polymorphisms and Responsiveness to Diets" for students and doctoral students of 20 partners from EU countries participating in European Nutrigenomic network of excellence;
    Involving in propagating Framework Programs by the European Union in new member countries - Participation in the business trip of representatives of the European Union Countries representatives under sb's management of commissioner Paterman in the Ukraine in 2006.
    Expert evaluator of the European Commission for scientific projects in the area health and food for 6, and 7th Framework. Expert evaluator NCBiR, NCN and Pol-Norwegian projects. Reviewer of articles in scientific journals.
