Prof. Dawn is the Maureen and Marvin Dunn Professor and Director of the Division of Cardiovascular Diseases at the University of Kansas Medical Center. He is also the Director of the Cardiovascular Research Institute, Director of the Midwest Stem Cell Therapy Center.
He received his medical degree from the Calcutta Medical College in 1989, and completed internal medicine residency training at the University of Missouri-Columbia and cardiology fellowship at the University of Louisville. He joined the faculty at the University of Louisville in 2000 and was promoted to tenured full professor in 2008. He moved to the University of Kansas in 2009.
Prof. Dawn is a physician-scientist with strong commitment to all aspects of academic medicine: education, research, and patient care. At the University of Louisville, Dr. Dawn contributed to the growth of stem cell program since its inception. After moving to KU, in 2009 he founded the Cardiovascular Research Institute where scientists and physicians are engaged in a wide spectrum of basic as well as clinical cardiovascular research and clinical trials. Working closely with the state legislature, in 2013 Dr. Dawn founded the Midwest Stem Cell Therapy Center primarily focused on advancing therapy with adult stem cells. The center also operates a state-of-the-art Good Manufacturing Practice facility for human cell processing for regenerative therapies.
Prof. Dawn is an active scientist in translational medicine field and active clinician in cardiology. His translational research interest includes adult cell therapy for cardiac repair, organ protection during cardiopulmonary arrest, biology of adult stem cells, role of cytokines in cardiac remodeling, diabetes and cardiovascular injury.
Prof. Dawn is an author of more than 100 articles published in top impacted cardiology journals as well as book chapters in the field of stem cell research and cardiology cited more than 3500 times. He is also an authors of 2 patens and several patent applications. Prof. Dawn is a reviewer and board member of several prestigious scientific journals including Circulation Research, Journal of Molecular and Cellular Cardiology, American Journal of Physiology and Basic Research in Cardiology. He is a PI of several NIH project and successful internationally recognized scientist.
Prof. Dawn's involvement with the NIH, AHA, and ESC has also included review of grant proposals, serving on committees, and such. He is a charter member of the MIM study section at the NIH and a member of the Editorial Board of several prominent cardiovascular journals. He is a Fellow of the American Heart Association, the American College of Cardiology, and the American College of Physicians.
