Human Genome Variation Research Group studied 113 DNA variants from 46 pigmentation genes in 1,000 Polish individuals to investigate the genetic predisposition to freckles. The Group published in Forensic Science Investigation: Genetics.
About the Study
The study revealed that freckles partially share the genetic background with eye, skin and hair colour but genetic interactions and sex play a more important role in the predisposition to freckling.
Two prediction models were developed using regression methods for forensic intelligence purposes. A simplified model predicts the presence or absence of freckles. A multinomial model can additionally distinguish slightly freckled and heavily freckled individuals.
