START scholarships for MCB researchers

START scholarships for MCB researchers

We are delighted to announce that two of our researchers have been successful in gaining one of the oldest and most prestigious scholarships from The Foundation For Polish Science - START. Katarzyna Owczarek and Rościsław Krutyhołowa have been awarded the scholarships in recognition of their past achievements and to support further scientific development.

FNP 2020 START Scholarchip

Winners receive an annual scholarship of 28 000 PLN, which can be used for any purpose. This year, 100 scholarships were awarded to outstanding young scholars from all over Poland selected from among 845 submitted applications.

We asked our  START winners about their work:

Katarzyna Owczarek - ViroGenetics Group - supervisor Prof. Krzysztof Pyrć

My research focuses on the early stages of infections caused by coronaviruses and flaviviruses, which pose a threat to human health and life.

So far, I have been able to trace how coronavirus OC43 and Zika viruses enter cells and to study how infection develops through the use of inhibitors that block the virus entry pathways.

I am currently working on identifying host cell proteins (proteases) that play a key role in the entry process of clinical human coronavirus strains. In addition, I am testing compounds that can potentially inhibit SARS-CoV-2 infection.

Rościsław Krutyhołowa - Max Planck Resarch Group - supervisor Dr. Sebastian Glatt

My main scientific interest is a tRNA modification process. Thanks to tRNA modifications cells are able to produce properly folded proteins. At the moment I am using cryo-electron microscopy to solve the structure of Elongator complex bound to its regulatory subunits.

Congratulations to our researchers and keep up the good work!
