Molecular Mechanisms of Disease Lab Leader in Malopolska Centre of Biotechnology at Jagiellonian University

2020 - | Molecular Mechanisms of Disease Lab Leader

Neli Kachamakova-Trojanowska graduated Sofia University in Bulgaria and then did her PhD at the Polish Academy of Sciences in the field of fish immunology. In 2006 she worked as a postdoc at the International Institute for Molecular and Cell Biology in Warsaw on Alzheimer’s disease project. Then she moved to Jagiellonian University in Krakow joining Cell Biochemistry Department at the Faculty of Biochemistry, Biophysics and Biotechnology working on European project related to diabetes. Since 2010, she worked in several different projects and groups (JCET, Medical Biotechnology department) within the University, gaining experience and focusing on the broad field of endothelial dysfunction in relation to human diseases. Neli joined MCB at 2018 and since 2020 she is a Junior group leader of the Molecular Mechanisms of Disease lab. In 2022 she received her habilitation degree from the Discipline Council of Biological Sciences at Jagiellonian University.

Human iPSC disease modeling provides an unlimited resource of disease-relevant cells in a personalized manner, which could be used for identifying the molecular mechanisms underlying human pathologies and developing novel cures. Moreover, the generation of isogenic lines through CRISPR/Cas9 gene editing, currently allows researchers to correlate the genetic mutations with the disease phenotypes without the confounding influences from the genetic background.
